- Medieval Breed: Written records of the Croatian Sheepdog date back to 1374, making it one of the oldest documented herding breeds in Europe.
- Always Black: The Croatian Sheepdog is almost always solid black, sometimes with white patches on the chest. This uniformity makes them distinctive among herding breeds.
- Curly Coat: Their distinctive wavy-to-curly black coat sets them apart from other European herding breeds.
- Unchanged for Centuries: The breed's description from the 14th century closely matches modern Croatian Sheepdogs, suggesting remarkable breed consistency.
Breed History
The Croatian Sheepdog (Hrvatski Ovčar) is a medium-sized herding breed from Croatia with a documented history spanning over 600 years. Bishop Peter Bakić of Đakovo described the breed in 1374, and his 1719 successor Bishop Petar Bakić traced the breed's continuous presence in the Slavonia region. The breed has been used to herd sheep and cattle on the plains of eastern Croatia for centuries. Professor Stjepan Romić began systematic breeding in 1935, and the FCI recognized the breed in 1969.
Personality and Behaviour
- Keen Worker: Croatian Sheepdogs are focused, eager workers with strong herding instincts. They are attentive to their handler and respond quickly to commands.
- Loyal & Attached: They bond deeply with their owners and are dedicated companions. They prefer to be near their people.
- Alert & Watchful: They make excellent watchdogs, naturally alerting to strangers or unusual activity.
- Energetic & Agile: They are fast, nimble dogs that need regular physical and mental challenges to stay happy.
Care
- Exercise: At least 60 minutes of vigorous daily exercise. Herding, agility, flyball, and active hiking are ideal activities. They need a job or structured tasks.
- Grooming: Their curly black coat needs brushing two to three times weekly to prevent matting. Despite its appearance, the coat is relatively low-maintenance compared to other curly-coated breeds.
- Diet: Feed a high-quality food for active medium-sized breeds. Adjust portions based on activity level. Working dogs may need more calories.
- Health: Generally a very healthy breed due to its long, natural development. Occasional hip dysplasia and patellar luxation occur. Regular vet checkups maintain their good health.

Calculate NowFrequently Asked Questions About Croatian Sheepdog
When you talk to a breeder, you're not just asking “do you have available Croatian Sheepdog puppies?” You're looking for a match in the process of rehoming a dog. As a prospective dog owner, you are assessing how predictable the dog's health, temperament, and long-term welfare will be and whether the breeder's practices reduce avoidable risk.
You should engage in a conversation about the following topics:
- Which health tests and genetic screening do you do specifically for Croatian Sheepdog, and can I see the results?
- What do you do if a puppy develops a serious genetic condition? What contract, policies and support do you offer as a breeder?
- How are puppies raised from birth to 8+ weeks? Ask about socialization, philosophies on early neurological development, handling, and exposure.
The real cost of a dog isn't just the puppy price. After year one, the cost of a dog includes the predictable annual costs + the unpredictable “risk costs.” Your goal is to make the cost legible before you commit, as one of the top causes of surrendering a dog is not being able to afford the dog in later years.
To help you assess these costs, Paction has created the Ultimate Cost Calculator. You can also read an article written by a Paction breeder on why a prospective dog owner should focus on the ongoing costs of dog ownership and not “how much” the puppy costs.
Every dog breed has certain health issues that tend to occur more often, but what matters most is how predictable and preventable those risks are. For many breeds, common concerns include inherited conditions (such as orthopedic, eye, or cardiac issues) as well as lifestyle-related challenges like weight management, dental health, skin or ear problems, and anxiety.
Responsible breeders help reduce inherited risk through appropriate health testing, careful selection of breeding pairs, and transparency about family history. As an owner, you play an equally important role. Consistent preventive veterinary care, proper exercise and enrichment, healthy nutrition, and early screening can significantly improve long-term health outcomes.
Whether a Croatian Sheepdog is right for you depends less on the breed itself and more on how well its typical energy level, temperament, and care needs align with your daily life. Important factors include your schedule and activity level, living environment, household dynamics (such as children, other pets, or allergies), and tolerance for noise or independence. Long-term fit also comes down to maintenance like grooming, training needs, and how often you travel or rely on outside dog care.
