The Croatian Sheepdog, often called the Hrvatski Ovčar, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Croatian Sheepdog (Hrvatski Ovčar) is a medium-sized herding breed from Croatia with a documented history spanning over 600 years. Bishop Peter Bakić of Đakovo described the breed in 1374, and his 1719 successor Bishop Petar Bakić traced the breed's continuous presence in the Slavonia region. The breed has been used to herd sheep and cattle on the plains of eastern Croatia for centuries. Professor Stjepan Romić began systematic breeding in 1935, and the FCI recognized the breed in 1969.
