A Tech Force for Responsible Pup Rehoming Practices

At Paction, we believe:

  • Pup Parents and Pup Providers should work together to protect the welfare of dogs, both generally speaking for the breed and on the level of the individual pup
  • Those who breed dogs should be focused on the physical health, mental health and the temperament of the parent dogs and their litters
  • Every dog should be bred with the intention of creating a healthy and satisfying life for the pup

What is the most responsible way to bring home a pup? At Paction, we recognize the complexity and responsibility that come with this decision. The debate between choosing a breeder or a rescue is indeed a polarized one, but we believe that reputable breeders play an important role in the puppy industry. Paction is committed to preventing irresponsible breeding and overpopulation by promoting only the most responsible breeders and by educating prospective pup parents to make the best decisions in their quest to bring home a dog.

While rescuing is admirable, it may not be the right choice for every potential pup parent. The reality is that many people still choose to obtain a pup from a breeder rather than a rescue or shelter. Paction's research determined that about 77% of Canadian dog owners have taken home a dog from a breeder at some point in their journey of dog ownership. With this in mind, Paction is working to create a more transparent and accountable experience, ensuring that only breeders who meet high standards with intentional and thoughtful breeding programs thrive. By also educating consumers on the process of shopping for a dog, together we can significantly reduce the prevalence of irresponsible breeding practices.

In contrast to rescues, which often have stringent application processes and high standards for adoption, pups sold online have historically been available on a whim. This disparity poses risks not only to the animals but also by potentially rewarding those who are not embracing responsible breeding practices. Paction seeks to level the playing field for online shopping for pups by promoting a more thorough process and access to responsible breeders. Paction supports current movements to ban the sale of animals in pet stores and on platforms like Kijiji and Craigslist, as these avenues often facilitate irresponsible breeding and allow puppy mills to continue to persist.

Educating the public about responsible dog ownership is a critical piece to this problem. Paction aims to raise awareness about not only the importance of choosing responsible breeders, but HOW to choose the right breed for your household, how to choose a responsible breeder, and how to prepare for the responsibility of dog ownership. In doing so, Paction aims to empower potential dog owners to prioritize the well-being of all future pups and to ultimately, be the best pup parent they can be!
