Get to Know Braque du Bourbonnais

  • Born Pointer: Braque du Bourbonnais puppies often display pointing behavior as young as seven to eight weeks old—an incredibly early instinctive drive.
  • Naturally Short-Tailed: Many Braques du Bourbonnais are born with naturally short tails, a distinctive breed trait that sets them apart.
  • Twice Saved: The breed was rescued from near-extinction twice in the 20th century, with the modern population rebuilt from a very small foundation.
  • Ticked Coat: Their coat features a distinctive 'ticked' pattern—fine colored flecks on a white background—in either liver or fawn, sometimes called 'lie de vin' (wine dregs).

Breed History

The Braque du Bourbonnais is a French pointing breed from the historic province of Bourbonnais in central France. First described in the Renaissance, the breed was prized for its natural pointing instinct and cooperative hunting style. The breed nearly went extinct twice—after World War I and again in the 1960s and 70s—before dedicated French breeders revived it starting in 1981. The breed was introduced to North America in the 1990s and has developed a devoted following among upland bird hunters.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Gentle & Affectionate: At home, they are calm, loving dogs that enjoy being close to their families. They are excellent with children and other pets.
  • Natural Hunter: In the field, they transform into focused, methodical bird dogs with a strong natural pointing instinct and soft mouth for retrieving.
  • Eager to Please: Their desire to work cooperatively with their handler makes them highly trainable and responsive to positive methods.
  • Adaptable: They transition smoothly between energetic fieldwork and relaxed home life, making them versatile companions for hunting families.

Care

  • Exercise: At least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Hunting, hiking, running, and field training are ideal. They also enjoy swimming and interactive play.
  • Grooming: Their short, fine coat is easy to maintain. A weekly brushing removes loose hair. Check ears regularly—like all sporting breeds with pendant ears, they can be prone to infections.
  • Diet: Feed a high-quality food for active medium-sized breeds. Adjust portions based on activity level—working dogs may need more calories during hunting season.
  • Health: A generally healthy breed. Watch for hip dysplasia, eye conditions, pulmonic stenosis (a heart condition), and ear infections. Responsible breeders screen for these issues.

Frequently Asked Questions About Braque du Bourbonnais

When you talk to a breeder, you're not just asking “do you have available Braque du Bourbonnais puppies?” You're looking for a match in the process of rehoming a dog. As a prospective dog owner, you are assessing how predictable the dog's health, temperament, and long-term welfare will be and whether the breeder's practices reduce avoidable risk.

You should engage in a conversation about the following topics:

  • Which health tests and genetic screening do you do specifically for Braque du Bourbonnais, and can I see the results?
  • What do you do if a puppy develops a serious genetic condition? What contract, policies and support do you offer as a breeder?
  • How are puppies raised from birth to 8+ weeks? Ask about socialization, philosophies on early neurological development, handling, and exposure.

The real cost of a dog isn't just the puppy price. After year one, the cost of a dog includes the predictable annual costs + the unpredictable “risk costs.” Your goal is to make the cost legible before you commit, as one of the top causes of surrendering a dog is not being able to afford the dog in later years.

To help you assess these costs, Paction has created the Ultimate Cost Calculator. You can also read an article written by a Paction breeder on why a prospective dog owner should focus on the ongoing costs of dog ownership and not “how much” the puppy costs.

Every dog breed has certain health issues that tend to occur more often, but what matters most is how predictable and preventable those risks are. For many breeds, common concerns include inherited conditions (such as orthopedic, eye, or cardiac issues) as well as lifestyle-related challenges like weight management, dental health, skin or ear problems, and anxiety.

Responsible breeders help reduce inherited risk through appropriate health testing, careful selection of breeding pairs, and transparency about family history. To understand more about responsible breeding programs that prioritize health and genetic screening of breeding pairs, check out Making Science Simple: Canine Genetics for Puppy Shoppers.

As an owner, you play an equally important role. Consistent preventive veterinary care, proper exercise and enrichment, healthy nutrition, and early screening can significantly improve long-term health outcomes.

Whether a Braque du Bourbonnais is right for you depends less on the breed itself and more on how well its typical energy level, temperament, and care needs align with your daily life. Important factors include your schedule and activity level, living environment, household dynamics (such as children, other pets, or allergies), and tolerance for noise or independence. Long-term fit also comes down to maintenance like grooming, training needs, and how often you travel or rely on outside dog care.
