Get to Know Bohemian Shepherds

  • Medieval Heritage: Records of the Bohemian Shepherd date back to 1325, making it one of the oldest documented herding breeds in Central Europe.
  • Border Guardians: The Chod people used these dogs to patrol and protect the borders of the Bohemian Kingdom—a role they served for centuries.
  • German Shepherd Lookalike: Bohemian Shepherds resemble smaller, lighter German Shepherds with a gentler expression. They predated the German Shepherd breed by centuries.
  • Rare Breed: Outside the Czech Republic, Bohemian Shepherds are still quite rare. Most of the world's population resides in their homeland.

Breed History

The Bohemian Shepherd (Chodský Pes) is one of the oldest Czech dog breeds, with documented history dating back to the 14th century in the Chodsko region of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). These dogs served as versatile herding and guarding dogs for the Chod people who patrolled the southwestern borders of the Bohemian Kingdom. The breed nearly disappeared during the 20th century but was revived through a dedicated breeding program beginning in 1984. The Czech Republic's national kennel club (ČMKU) recognized the breed, and the FCI granted provisional recognition in 2019.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Eager to Please: Bohemian Shepherds are highly trainable and genuinely enjoy working with their handlers. They respond enthusiastically to positive reinforcement.
  • Family-Oriented: They are devoted family dogs that bond closely with all household members, including children and other pets.
  • Alert Guardians: They have a natural watchdog instinct and will alert their family to unusual activity, but they are not aggressive without cause.
  • Versatile Workers: These dogs excel in a wide range of activities including herding, agility, obedience, tracking, search and rescue, and therapy work.

Care

  • Exercise: At least 60 minutes of vigorous daily exercise is needed. They excel at hiking, agility, herding trials, and obedience training. Mental stimulation is equally important.
  • Grooming: Their long double coat requires brushing two to three times per week, increasing to daily during seasonal shedding periods. Pay attention to the feathering behind the ears and on the legs.
  • Diet: Feed a high-quality food for active medium-sized breeds. Adjust portions based on activity level. They generally maintain healthy weight when properly exercised.
  • Health: A relatively healthy breed. Watch for hip dysplasia (less common than in German Shepherds), ear infections, and bloat. Regular vet checkups and preventive care keep them healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bohemian Shepherd

When you talk to a breeder, you're not just asking “do you have available Bohemian Shepherd puppies?” You're looking for a match in the process of rehoming a dog. As a prospective dog owner, you are assessing how predictable the dog's health, temperament, and long-term welfare will be and whether the breeder's practices reduce avoidable risk.

You should engage in a conversation about the following topics:

  • Which health tests and genetic screening do you do specifically for Bohemian Shepherd, and can I see the results?
  • What do you do if a puppy develops a serious genetic condition? What contract, policies and support do you offer as a breeder?
  • How are puppies raised from birth to 8+ weeks? Ask about socialization, philosophies on early neurological development, handling, and exposure.

The real cost of a dog isn't just the puppy price. After year one, the cost of a dog includes the predictable annual costs + the unpredictable “risk costs.” Your goal is to make the cost legible before you commit, as one of the top causes of surrendering a dog is not being able to afford the dog in later years.

To help you assess these costs, Paction has created the Ultimate Cost Calculator. You can also read an article written by a Paction breeder on why a prospective dog owner should focus on the ongoing costs of dog ownership and not “how much” the puppy costs.

Every dog breed has certain health issues that tend to occur more often, but what matters most is how predictable and preventable those risks are. For many breeds, common concerns include inherited conditions (such as orthopedic, eye, or cardiac issues) as well as lifestyle-related challenges like weight management, dental health, skin or ear problems, and anxiety.

Responsible breeders help reduce inherited risk through appropriate health testing, careful selection of breeding pairs, and transparency about family history. To understand more about responsible breeding programs that prioritize health and genetic screening of breeding pairs, check out Making Science Simple: Canine Genetics for Puppy Shoppers.

As an owner, you play an equally important role. Consistent preventive veterinary care, proper exercise and enrichment, healthy nutrition, and early screening can significantly improve long-term health outcomes.

Whether a Bohemian Shepherd is right for you depends less on the breed itself and more on how well its typical energy level, temperament, and care needs align with your daily life. Important factors include your schedule and activity level, living environment, household dynamics (such as children, other pets, or allergies), and tolerance for noise or independence. Long-term fit also comes down to maintenance like grooming, training needs, and how often you travel or rely on outside dog care.
