The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier originated in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a hardworking farm dog. Descended from small terriers brought by British immigrants, they were bred for vermin control, guarding property, and companionship. These dogs thrived on farms and in rural homes, valued for their versatility and resilience. Over time, they became less common as farming changed, but dedicated breeders preserved the type. In the 1990s, the breed was officially distinguished from the Rat Terrier and named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt’s era and values.
