Get to Know Teddy Roosevelt Terriers

  • Named After a President—But Not Owned by Him: The breed is named after President Theodore Roosevelt because dogs of this type were commonly used during his era to control rat populations. There’s no evidence he personally owned one, but the name honors the breed’s rugged, working-class roots.
  • Built Low to the Ground for a Purpose: Their short legs weren’t accidental—this structure allowed them to efficiently chase rodents into burrows and tight spaces. It made them exceptional farm dogs despite their small size.
  • One of the Healthiest Small Terriers: Thanks to a relatively diverse genetic background, Teddy Roosevelt Terriers are known for fewer inherited health issues than many modern breeds. They are often praised for their overall robustness and longevity.
  • More Laid-Back Than Other Terriers: Unlike many terriers that are intense and nonstop, this breed tends to have an “off switch.” They’re energetic outdoors but content relaxing at home with their family.
  • Recognized Separately from Rat Terriers: Though once grouped with Rat Terriers, the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is now a distinct breed recognized by the UKC. Differences include heavier bone structure, shorter legs, and a calmer overall demeanor.

Breed History

The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier originated in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a hardworking farm dog. Descended from small terriers brought by British immigrants, they were bred for vermin control, guarding property, and companionship. These dogs thrived on farms and in rural homes, valued for their versatility and resilience. Over time, they became less common as farming changed, but dedicated breeders preserved the type. In the 1990s, the breed was officially distinguished from the Rat Terrier and named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt’s era and values.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Family-Oriented & Loyal: They form strong bonds with their people and prefer to be involved in daily activities. While affectionate, they’re not typically clingy.
  • Alert Without Being Excessively Vocal: Teddy Roosevelt Terriers make excellent watchdogs and will alert you to changes in their environment. However, they’re generally less yappy than many small breeds.
  • Confident & Independent Thinkers: They’re smart and capable of problem-solving, but this independence means they benefit from consistent guidance. Early socialization helps shape well-rounded adults.

Care

  • Grooming: A quick weekly brushing is enough to keep their short coat healthy and reduce shedding.
  • Training: They respond best to positive reinforcement and short, engaging training sessions that challenge their minds.
  • Exercise: Daily walks combined with playtime or scent games satisfy both their physical energy and hunting instincts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teddy Roosevelt Terrier

When you talk to a breeder, you're not just asking “do you have available Teddy Roosevelt Terrier puppies?” You're looking for a match in the process of rehoming a dog. As a prospective dog owner, you are assessing how predictable the dog's health, temperament, and long-term welfare will be and whether the breeder's practices reduce avoidable risk.

You should engage in a conversation about the following topics:

  • Which health tests and genetic screening do you do specifically for Teddy Roosevelt Terrier, and can I see the results?
  • What do you do if a puppy develops a serious genetic condition? What contract, policies and support do you offer as a breeder?
  • How are puppies raised from birth to 8+ weeks? Ask about socialization, philosophies on early neurological development, handling, and exposure.

The real cost of a dog isn't just the puppy price. After year one, the cost of a dog includes the predictable annual costs + the unpredictable “risk costs.” Your goal is to make the cost legible before you commit, as one of the top causes of surrendering a dog is not being able to afford the dog in later years.

To help you assess these costs, Paction has created the Ultimate Cost Calculator. You can also read an article written by a Paction breeder on why a prospective dog owner should focus on the ongoing costs of dog ownership and not “how much” the puppy costs.

Every dog breed has certain health issues that tend to occur more often, but what matters most is how predictable and preventable those risks are. For many breeds, common concerns include inherited conditions (such as orthopedic, eye, or cardiac issues) as well as lifestyle-related challenges like weight management, dental health, skin or ear problems, and anxiety.

Responsible breeders help reduce inherited risk through appropriate health testing, careful selection of breeding pairs, and transparency about family history. To understand more about responsible breeding programs that prioritize health and genetic screening of breeding pairs, check out Making Science Simple: Canine Genetics for Puppy Shoppers.

As an owner, you play an equally important role. Consistent preventive veterinary care, proper exercise and enrichment, healthy nutrition, and early screening can significantly improve long-term health outcomes.

Whether a Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is right for you depends less on the breed itself and more on how well its typical energy level, temperament, and care needs align with your daily life. Important factors include your schedule and activity level, living environment, household dynamics (such as children, other pets, or allergies), and tolerance for noise or independence. Long-term fit also comes down to maintenance like grooming, training needs, and how often you travel or rely on outside dog care.
