The Rottweiler, often called the Rottie or Rott, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Rottweiler descends from Roman drover dogs that accompanied legions through the Alps, herding and guarding cattle that fed the army. When the Romans settled in the German town of Rottweil, these dogs continued working as cattle drovers and butcher's dogs. The breed was known as the 'Rottweil butcher's dog' (Rottweiler Metzgerhund). Nearly extinct by the 1800s as railroads replaced cattle drives, the breed was revived as a police and military dog in the early 1900s. The AKC recognized the Rottweiler in 1931.
