The Pumi, often called the Hungarian Pumi, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Pumi is a Hungarian herding breed that developed in the 17th and 18th centuries when Hungarian Puli dogs were crossed with terrier-type and spitz-type dogs brought by French and German traders. The Pumi was developed as a nimble, alert cattle and sheep herding dog suited to the small farms of western Hungary. Unlike the Puli, which is a large-flock guardian/herder, the Pumi is a quick, agile driving dog. The breed was only recognized as distinct from the Puli in the early 20th century. AKC recognition came in 2016.
