The Kooikerhondje, often called the Kooiker or Kooiker Hound, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje (Dutch Decoy Dog) is a small sporting breed from the Netherlands with a history dating to the 16th century. The breed was developed to lure ducks into cage-like traps called 'eendenkooi' (duck decoys) by prancing along the edges of channels, wiggling its white-tipped tail to attract curious ducks. The breed appears in paintings by Dutch Old Masters including Rembrandt and Jan Steen. Nearly extinct after World War II, Baroness van Hardenbroek van Ammerstol revived the breed from just 25 surviving dogs.
