The Kuvasz, often called the Hungarian Kuvasz, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Kuvasz is a large Hungarian livestock guardian breed with roots dating to the Middle Ages. The breed likely accompanied Turkish and Cuman migrants to Hungary in the 13th century. 'Kuvasz' may derive from the Turkish word 'kavas' (armed guard) or 'kawasz' (protector). King Matthias I of Hungary (1458-1490) was famous for breeding Kuvaszok, trusting them more than his courtiers. The breed guarded livestock on the Hungarian plains for centuries and nearly went extinct after World War II.
