The Curly-Coated Retriever, often called the Curly or CCR, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Curly-Coated Retriever is the oldest of the retriever breeds, developed in England in the late 18th century. Its ancestry likely includes the now-extinct English Water Spaniel, the St. John's Water Dog (ancestor of all modern retrievers), and possibly the Poodle—which contributed the distinctive tight curls. The breed was a favorite of English gamekeepers and estate managers for its versatile retrieving ability on both land and water. Though once the most popular retriever in England, it was eclipsed by the Labrador and Golden Retriever and remains relatively rare today.
