The Hovawart, often called the Hovie, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Hovawart is a German guardian breed with roots in the Middle Ages. The name derives from Middle High German ('hova' = yard, 'wart' = watchman), meaning 'estate guardian.' First mentioned in German writings around 1210, the breed guarded estates and farms for centuries before declining in the 1800s. German breeder Kurt Friedrich König reconstructed the breed in the 1920s using farm dogs from the Black Forest, German Shepherds, Newfoundlands, Leonbergers, and other breeds. The FCI recognized the Hovawart in 1937.
