The Polish Lowland Sheepdog, often called the PON or Polski Owczarek Nizinny, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Polish Lowland Sheepdog, known in its homeland as the Polski Owczarek Nizinny, is an ancient herding breed believed to have descended from Asian long-haired herding dogs brought to Poland by nomadic tribes. Over centuries, the breed adapted to life on the Polish plains, excelling in managing livestock with sharp intelligence, keen memory, and a strong work ethic. The breed nearly disappeared after World War II, but dedicated breeders, most notably Dr. Danuta Hryniewicz, reestablished it using a few surviving dogs, particularly a male named Smok, who became foundational to modern PON lines. Today, the breed remains beloved for its brainy, lively nature and characteristic shaggy appearance.
