The Rat Terrier, often called the Rattie or RT, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Rat Terrier is an American breed developed from crosses of Smooth Fox Terriers, Manchester Terriers, Bull Terriers, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, and Beagles. They were the quintessential American farm dog from the early 1900s to the 1950s, serving as ratters, squirrel dogs, and general-purpose farm companions. President Theodore Roosevelt is often credited with naming the breed after his own Rat Terrier successfully cleared the White House of a rat infestation. The AKC recognized the breed in 2013.
