The Lakeland Terrier, often called the Lakie or Lakeland, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Lakeland Terrier originated in the Lake District of northern England, where it was bred to protect sheep from foxes. Unlike many terrier breeds, the Lakeland had to work in the rugged, mountainous terrain of the Lake District, requiring a tough, agile, and determined dog. The breed is one of the oldest working terrier breeds, closely related to the Bedlington Terrier and Border Terrier. The AKC recognized the breed in 1934.
