The Portuguese Water Dog, often called the Portie or PWD, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Portuguese Water Dog (Cão de Água) was developed along the coast of Portugal as a fisherman's working dog. They herded fish into nets, retrieved lost tackle, swam messages between boats, and guarded the catch. Their webbed feet and waterproof coat made them perfectly adapted for ocean work. When mechanized fishing reduced the breed's working role, it nearly disappeared. American breeder Deyanne Miller led its revival in the 1970s. The breed gained worldwide fame when the Obama family chose Portuguese Water Dogs as their White House pets.
