The Neapolitan Mastiff, often called the Neo or Mastino Napoletano, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Neapolitan Mastiff (Mastino Napoletano) is an ancient Italian breed descending from Roman war dogs and molossus-type dogs used throughout the ancient world. After the fall of Rome, the breed survived in the Campania region of southern Italy, particularly around Naples, where it served as a guard dog and estate protector. The modern breed was revived by Italian painter and dog fancier Piero Scanziani in the 1940s, who standardized the breed. The AKC recognized Neapolitan Mastiffs in 2004.
