The Kai Ken, often called the Kai or Tora Inu (Tiger Dog), is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Kai Ken is an ancient Japanese breed from the mountainous Kai province (modern Yamanashi Prefecture) on the island of Honshu. One of six native Japanese spitz-type breeds, the Kai Ken was used to hunt wild boar and deer in the rugged mountain terrain. The breed's brindle coat provided camouflage in the forested mountains. Relatively isolated until the 1930s, the breed was designated a Natural Monument by the Japanese government in 1934. The Kai Ken remains rare outside Japan.
