Breed history

The Bearded Collie, often affectionately called the “Beardie,” is a herding breed that originated in Scotland, where it was developed to help shepherds manage flocks in rugged, mountainous terrain. Its history dates back several centuries, with references to shaggy-coated herding dogs appearing as early as the 1500s. The Bearded Collie was prized for its intelligence, agility, and weather-resistant coat, making it well-suited for working in harsh Scottish climates. Though the breed’s numbers declined during the early 20th century, it was revived in the 1940s thanks to the efforts of dedicated breeders, particularly Mrs. G. Olive Willison, who played a key role in reestablishing the modern line. Today, the Bearded Collie is valued not only as a skilled working dog but also as a lively, affectionate companion.
