The breed descended from German Spitz dogs brought to the United States by German immigrants in the 19th century. Renamed during World War I due to anti-German sentiment, the American Eskimo Dog became popular as a versatile and intelligent companion. The breed excelled in performing acts in traveling circuses, showcasing its agility, intelligence, and striking white coat.
