Get to Know Curly-Coated Retrievers

  • Oldest Retriever: The Curly-Coated Retriever is the oldest recognized retriever breed, predating the Labrador and Golden Retriever by decades.
  • Unique Coat: Their tight, crisp curls are unlike any other retriever breed and serve as waterproof insulation for cold-water work.
  • Multi-Purpose: English gamekeepers valued them as the ultimate all-around gun dog—retrieving on land and water while also doubling as estate guardians.
  • Rare Breed: Despite being the oldest retriever, the Curly-Coated Retriever is one of the rarest, with far fewer registrations than Labradors or Goldens.

Breed History

The Curly-Coated Retriever is the oldest of the retriever breeds, developed in England in the late 18th century. Its ancestry likely includes the now-extinct English Water Spaniel, the St. John's Water Dog (ancestor of all modern retrievers), and possibly the Poodle—which contributed the distinctive tight curls. The breed was a favorite of English gamekeepers and estate managers for its versatile retrieving ability on both land and water. Though once the most popular retriever in England, it was eclipsed by the Labrador and Golden Retriever and remains relatively rare today.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Confident & Independent: Curly-Coated Retrievers are more independent and self-reliant than other retriever breeds. They are confident dogs that don't need constant reassurance.
  • Gentle & Loyal: Despite their independent streak, they are loyal, affectionate family dogs that are gentle with children.
  • Reserved with Strangers: Unlike the universally friendly Lab, Curlies are more aloof with strangers—warming up on their own terms.
  • Versatile Workers: They are enthusiastic, tireless retrievers in the field and water, combining athleticism with intelligence.

Care

  • Exercise: At least 60 minutes of vigorous daily exercise. Swimming, retrieving, hiking, and field work are ideal. They have excellent endurance and stamina.
  • Grooming: Their curly coat is surprisingly easy to maintain. No brushing (which can frizz the curls)—instead, wet and shake or gently finger-comb. Trim around ears and tail occasionally.
  • Diet: Feed a high-quality food for large, active breeds. Adjust calories for activity level—working dogs need more. Maintain a lean, athletic build.
  • Health: Watch for hip dysplasia, exercise-induced collapse, glycogen storage disease, epilepsy, and eye conditions. Cancer is a concern in the breed. Regular vet visits and health screening are important.

Frequently Asked Questions About Curly-Coated Retriever

When you talk to a breeder, you're not just asking “do you have available Curly-Coated Retriever puppies?” You're looking for a match in the process of rehoming a dog. As a prospective dog owner, you are assessing how predictable the dog's health, temperament, and long-term welfare will be and whether the breeder's practices reduce avoidable risk.

You should engage in a conversation about the following topics:

  • Which health tests and genetic screening do you do specifically for Curly-Coated Retriever, and can I see the results?
  • What do you do if a puppy develops a serious genetic condition? What contract, policies and support do you offer as a breeder?
  • How are puppies raised from birth to 8+ weeks? Ask about socialization, philosophies on early neurological development, handling, and exposure.

The real cost of a dog isn't just the puppy price. After year one, the cost of a dog includes the predictable annual costs + the unpredictable “risk costs.” Your goal is to make the cost legible before you commit, as one of the top causes of surrendering a dog is not being able to afford the dog in later years.

To help you assess these costs, Paction has created the Ultimate Cost Calculator. You can also read an article written by a Paction breeder on why a prospective dog owner should focus on the ongoing costs of dog ownership and not “how much” the puppy costs.

Every dog breed has certain health issues that tend to occur more often, but what matters most is how predictable and preventable those risks are. For many breeds, common concerns include inherited conditions (such as orthopedic, eye, or cardiac issues) as well as lifestyle-related challenges like weight management, dental health, skin or ear problems, and anxiety.

Responsible breeders help reduce inherited risk through appropriate health testing, careful selection of breeding pairs, and transparency about family history. To understand more about responsible breeding programs that prioritize health and genetic screening of breeding pairs, check out Making Science Simple: Canine Genetics for Puppy Shoppers.

As an owner, you play an equally important role. Consistent preventive veterinary care, proper exercise and enrichment, healthy nutrition, and early screening can significantly improve long-term health outcomes.

Whether a Curly-Coated Retriever is right for you depends less on the breed itself and more on how well its typical energy level, temperament, and care needs align with your daily life. Important factors include your schedule and activity level, living environment, household dynamics (such as children, other pets, or allergies), and tolerance for noise or independence. Long-term fit also comes down to maintenance like grooming, training needs, and how often you travel or rely on outside dog care.
