Get to Know Boerboels

  • Lion Protectors: Boerboels were bred to guard South African homesteads against dangerous wildlife, including lions and leopards—a testament to their incredible courage.
  • Farmer's Best Friend: The name Boerboel literally translates to 'farmer's dog,' reflecting their centuries-long role as farmstead protectors in South Africa.
  • Gentle Giants: Despite their imposing size, well-socialized Boerboels are known for being remarkably gentle and patient with children in their family.
  • Powerful Build: The Boerboel is one of the most powerful dog breeds in the world, with a bite force estimated at over 800 PSI.

Breed History

The Boerboel (pronounced 'boo-r-bull') is a large mastiff-type breed from South Africa. The name translates to 'farmer's dog' in Afrikaans. Descended from large European dogs brought to South Africa by Dutch, German, and Huguenot settlers in the 1600s, they were crossed with indigenous African breeds to create a powerful guardian capable of protecting remote homesteads from predators including lions, leopards, and baboons. The breed was nearly lost during urbanization but was revived through dedicated breeding programs in the 1980s.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Calmly Confident: Boerboels carry themselves with a quiet self-assurance. They assess situations before reacting, making them reliable and predictable in familiar environments.
  • Devoted Protectors: They are deeply loyal to their families and are naturally protective. They will position themselves between their family and any perceived threat.
  • Good with Children: Boerboels raised with children are typically patient and gentle with them. However, their size means adult supervision is always necessary.
  • Dominant Tendencies: These dogs need a confident, experienced owner who can establish clear leadership. Without proper training and boundaries, their protective instincts can become problematic.

Care

  • Exercise: Despite their size, Boerboels have moderate exercise needs—about 45 to 60 minutes of daily walking and play. Avoid intense exercise during their growth phase (up to 18 to 24 months) to protect developing joints.
  • Grooming: Their short, dense coat needs only weekly brushing. They are moderate shedders. Clean facial wrinkles, check ears, and trim nails regularly.
  • Diet: Feed a high-quality large-breed food. During puppyhood, use a formula designed for large-breed puppies to ensure controlled, even growth—rapid growth can lead to joint problems.
  • Health: Watch for hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease, bloat, and entropion. Responsible breeders screen for these conditions. Regular vet visits and maintaining a healthy weight are crucial for this massive breed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Boerboel

When you talk to a breeder, you're not just asking “do you have available Boerboel puppies?” You're looking for a match in the process of rehoming a dog. As a prospective dog owner, you are assessing how predictable the dog's health, temperament, and long-term welfare will be and whether the breeder's practices reduce avoidable risk.

You should engage in a conversation about the following topics:

  • Which health tests and genetic screening do you do specifically for Boerboel, and can I see the results?
  • What do you do if a puppy develops a serious genetic condition? What contract, policies and support do you offer as a breeder?
  • How are puppies raised from birth to 8+ weeks? Ask about socialization, philosophies on early neurological development, handling, and exposure.

The real cost of a dog isn't just the puppy price. After year one, the cost of a dog includes the predictable annual costs + the unpredictable “risk costs.” Your goal is to make the cost legible before you commit, as one of the top causes of surrendering a dog is not being able to afford the dog in later years.

To help you assess these costs, Paction has created the Ultimate Cost Calculator. You can also read an article written by a Paction breeder on why a prospective dog owner should focus on the ongoing costs of dog ownership and not “how much” the puppy costs.

Every dog breed has certain health issues that tend to occur more often, but what matters most is how predictable and preventable those risks are. For many breeds, common concerns include inherited conditions (such as orthopedic, eye, or cardiac issues) as well as lifestyle-related challenges like weight management, dental health, skin or ear problems, and anxiety.

Responsible breeders help reduce inherited risk through appropriate health testing, careful selection of breeding pairs, and transparency about family history. To understand more about responsible breeding programs that prioritize health and genetic screening of breeding pairs, check out Making Science Simple: Canine Genetics for Puppy Shoppers.

As an owner, you play an equally important role. Consistent preventive veterinary care, proper exercise and enrichment, healthy nutrition, and early screening can significantly improve long-term health outcomes.

Whether a Boerboel is right for you depends less on the breed itself and more on how well its typical energy level, temperament, and care needs align with your daily life. Important factors include your schedule and activity level, living environment, household dynamics (such as children, other pets, or allergies), and tolerance for noise or independence. Long-term fit also comes down to maintenance like grooming, training needs, and how often you travel or rely on outside dog care.
