Get to Know Bergamasco Shepherds

  • Their Coat Forms Natural “Flocks”: The Bergamasco’s coat naturally mats into flat, felt-like flocks that protect them from cold, heat, and predators. Unlike cords, these flocks form organically and require surprisingly little maintenance once established.
  • One of the Oldest Herding Breeds in the World: Bergamascos are believed to have existed for over 2,000 years. Their lineage traces back to ancient sheepdogs used by nomadic herders in the Italian Alps.
  • Excellent Problem-Solvers: Bred to work independently in mountainous terrain, Bergamascos are highly intelligent and capable of making decisions without human guidance. This makes them thoughtful workers rather than blindly obedient dogs.
  • Naturally Calm & Observant: Unlike many high-energy herding breeds, Bergamascos tend to be steady and deliberate. They conserve energy and act only when necessary.
  • The Coat Acts as Natural Camouflage: Their distinctive coat helped them blend in with sheep, confusing predators such as wolves. This gave them a strategic advantage while guarding flocks.

Breed History

The Bergamasco Shepherd originated in the Italian Alps near Bergamo, where they were bred to herd and guard sheep in harsh mountain environments. Developed to work long hours with minimal supervision, they needed intelligence, endurance, and resilience rather than speed. Their unique coat evolved as natural protection against extreme weather and predators. Nearly extinct after World War II, the breed was revived through dedicated preservation efforts and is now treasured for both its working ability and distinctive appearance.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Independent but Deeply Loyal: Bergamascos think for themselves yet remain strongly devoted to their families. They are known to watch over household members quietly and attentively.
  • Excellent With Children: Their gentle and patient nature makes them particularly good with kids. They often act as calm guardians rather than overly playful companions.
  • Reserved With Strangers: Bergamascos are typically aloof rather than aggressive toward unfamiliar people. Early socialization helps them remain confident and composed in new situations.

Care

  • Exercise: Moderate daily activity, such as walks or purposeful outdoor time, keeps them mentally and physically balanced.
  • Training: Use respectful, positive training methods; they respond best when treated as thinking partners rather than commanded.
  • Grooming: Once the coat has formed flocks, grooming is minimal—mainly separating flocks by hand and keeping the coat clean.

What to ask your breeder?

It's important to ensure your breeder conducts thorough health screenings on the two dogs that were bred for the litter. Reputable breeders should perform genetic laboratory testing and also orthopedic evaluations. There's no way to guarantee every puppy in every litter is 100% free from health problems, but responsible breeding practices greatly reduce the risk.

Here's a short summary of what you should be asking your breeder:
