The Sussex Spaniel, often called the Sussex, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Sussex Spaniel was developed in the 1800s in Sussex, England, by Augustus Elliott Fuller of Rosehill Park. Fuller bred these low, long-bodied spaniels to work the dense hedgerows and heavy clay terrain of Sussex, where their unique 'giving tongue' (barking while trailing) helped hunters track them through thick cover. The breed nearly went extinct during World War II—saved by breeder Joy Freer who maintained the line through just eight dogs. The Sussex remains one of the rarest sporting breeds.
