The Pyrenean Shepherd, often called the Pyr Shep or Berger des Pyrénées, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Pyrenean Shepherd (Berger des Pyrénées) is a small, energetic herding breed from the French Pyrenees. One of the smallest herding breeds, Pyrenean Shepherds worked in tandem with Great Pyrenees—the little shepherd drove sheep while the big Pyrenees guarded them from predators. The breed served with distinction as messenger, search-and-rescue, and therapy dogs during World War I. They come in two coat varieties: rough-faced and smooth-faced. The AKC recognized the breed in 2009.
