The Portuguese Sheepdog (Cão da Serra de Aires) originated in the Serra de Aires region of Portugal, a semi-arid plateau known for its flocks of sheep and goats. Developed in the early 20th century, the breed’s ancestry likely includes Pyrenean Sheepdogs, Catalan Sheepdogs, and other Iberian herding dogs brought by shepherds across the region. Renowned for their intelligence and endurance, Portuguese Sheepdogs were prized for working independently in harsh terrain — guiding livestock by sight and sound rather than aggression. Though once at risk of extinction as traditional herding declined, devoted Portuguese breeders preserved the line.
