The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, often called the Podengo or Pequeno, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is the smallest of the three Portuguese Podengo size varieties (Grande, Médio, and Pequeno). This ancient breed was developed in Portugal for hunting rabbits in dense brush and rocky terrain. The Pequeno flushed rabbits from burrows and dense vegetation. Podengos are believed to be among the oldest dog breeds in the Western world, descended from ancient dogs brought to the Iberian Peninsula by Phoenician traders around 1000 BC. The AKC recognized the breed in 2013.
