The Norwich Terrier originated in England in the late 19th century, developed as a small but fearless working terrier bred to hunt vermin and control pests on farms. Closely related to the Norfolk Terrier, the Norwich was originally part of the same breed until they were formally separated in 1964, distinguished mainly by their ears. Norwich Terriers have upright ears, while Norfolks have drop ears. Despite their small size, Norwich Terriers were valued for their spirited, hardy nature and ability to work in packs, making them both efficient ratters and lively companions.
