The Irish Red And White Setter, often called the IRWS or Red and White, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Irish Red and White Setter is the older of the two Irish setter breeds, predating the solid red Irish Setter. Developed in Ireland in the 17th century as a gun dog, the breed was used to set (point) game birds for hunters. By the 19th century, the flashy solid red Irish Setter became so popular that the Red and White variety nearly went extinct. Revival efforts began in the early 1900s, and the breed was recognized by the AKC in 2009.
