The Cirneco dell’Etna, often called the Cirneco, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Cirneco dell'Etna is an ancient Sicilian sighthound that has existed on the island of Sicily for over 2,500 years. Named after Mount Etna, the breed hunted rabbits on the rugged volcanic slopes using sight, scent, and hearing. The Cirneco is closely related to the Pharaoh Hound of Malta, both likely descended from ancient Egyptian hunting dogs brought to the Mediterranean by Phoenician traders. Italian veterinarian Dr. Maurizio Migneco championed the breed's preservation in the 1930s. The AKC recognized the breed in 2015.
