The Australian Kelpie is a highly skilled herding breed developed in the late 19th century in Australia to manage livestock in the country’s harsh and expansive outback. The breed originated from British working collies brought by settlers, which were then selectively bred for stamina, independence, and adaptability to the Australian climate and terrain. Named after a Scottish water spirit, the first Kelpie was a black-and-tan female of exceptional working ability, and her descendants carried on those traits.
