Breed history

The American Leopard Hound is one of the oldest treeing dog breeds in the United States, with a history that dates back to the early settlers. Its ancestors likely came from Spanish dogs brought to the Americas, which were then crossed with various hound and herding breeds to create a versatile hunting dog suited to the rugged terrain of the American frontier. Bred for their endurance, intelligence, and strong scent-trailing ability, these dogs excelled at hunting a variety of game, including raccoons, squirrels, and even larger animals like bears. Originally known as the Leopard Cur, the breed was later renamed and recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 1998 as the American Leopard Hound.
