Breed history

The American Hairless Terrier is a relatively new and unique breed that originated in the United States in the 1970s. It began when a completely hairless puppy named "Josephine" was born in a litter of Rat Terriers in Louisiana. Recognizing the potential for a new, hypoallergenic companion breed, breeders Edwin and Willie Scott selectively bred Josephine and her descendants to develop and stabilize the hairless trait. Over time, they established a distinct line that retained the Rat Terrier’s spirited personality and athleticism, but with a smooth, hairless coat—or in some cases, a very short, coated variety. Officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2016, the American Hairless Terrier is now valued not only for its playful, intelligent nature but also for being a non-shedding, allergy-friendly companion.
