Get to Know Pomachons

  • Hypoallergenic Tendencies (But Not Guaranteed): Thanks to the Bichon Frise parent, many Pomachons shed less than average. While no dog is truly hypoallergenic, this mix is often easier for allergy-sensitive owners.
  • “Teddy Bear” Looks That Last Into Adulthood: Pomachons often retain a puppy-like face and fluffy coat throughout their lives. Their round eyes and soft expression are a big reason they’re so popular as companion dogs.
  • Big Personality in a Tiny Body: Despite their small size, Pomachons are confident and expressive. They often inherit the Pomeranian’s boldness balanced by the Bichon’s friendly charm.
  • Highly People-Oriented: This breed thrives on human attention and does best in homes where someone is around most of the day. They’re known to form strong emotional bonds and can become unhappy if left alone too long.
  • Adaptable to Almost Any Living Space: Pomachons are well-suited for apartments, condos, or houses. As long as they receive daily interaction and light exercise, they adjust easily to different lifestyles.

Breed History

The Pomachon is a modern designer crossbreed developed in the late 20th century as part of the growing demand for small, affectionate companion dogs. Breeders aimed to combine the playful intelligence of the Pomeranian with the gentle, low-shedding qualities of the Bichon Frise. While not recognized by major kennel clubs, Pomachons have gained popularity for their friendly temperament and manageable size. Because they are a mixed breed, appearance and personality can vary, but most Pomachons consistently reflect their parent breeds’ companion-focused traits.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Extremely Affectionate Companions: Pomachons love being close to their people and often follow them from room to room. They enjoy cuddling just as much as playtime.
  • Friendly With Guests and Other Pets: With proper socialization, they are welcoming toward strangers and generally get along well with other dogs. Their cheerful nature makes them popular family pets.
  • Sensitive & Emotionally Aware: This breed is quick to pick up on human moods and responds best to gentle, positive handling. Harsh corrections can cause anxiety or withdrawal.

Care

  • Grooming: Regular brushing (3–4 times per week) helps prevent matting and keeps their coat soft and manageable.
  • Training: Short, positive training sessions work best, as Pomachons can lose interest if training becomes repetitive.
  • Exercise: Daily walks and indoor play are usually enough to keep them healthy and happy.

What to ask your breeder?

It's important to ensure your breeder conducts thorough health screenings on the two dogs that were bred for the litter. Reputable breeders should perform genetic laboratory testing and also orthopedic evaluations. There's no way to guarantee every puppy in every litter is 100% free from health problems, but responsible breeding practices greatly reduce the risk.

Here's a short summary of what you should be asking your breeder:

Frequently Asked Questions About Pomachon

When you talk to a breeder, you're not just asking “do you have available Pomachon puppies?” You're looking for a match in the process of rehoming a dog. As a prospective dog owner, you are assessing how predictable the dog's health, temperament, and long-term welfare will be and whether the breeder's practices reduce avoidable risk.

You should engage in a conversation about the following topics:

  • Which health tests and genetic screening do you do specifically for Pomachon, and can I see the results?
  • What do you do if a puppy develops a serious genetic condition? What contract, policies and support do you offer as a breeder?
  • How are puppies raised from birth to 8+ weeks? Ask about socialization, philosophies on early neurological development, handling, and exposure.

The real cost of a dog isn't just the puppy price. After year one, the cost of a dog includes the predictable annual costs + the unpredictable “risk costs.” Your goal is to make the cost legible before you commit, as one of the top causes of surrendering a dog is not being able to afford the dog in later years.

To help you assess these costs, Paction has created the Ultimate Cost Calculator. You can also read an article written by a Paction breeder on why a prospective dog owner should focus on the ongoing costs of dog ownership and not “how much” the puppy costs.

Every dog breed has certain health issues that tend to occur more often, but what matters most is how predictable and preventable those risks are. For many breeds, common concerns include inherited conditions (such as orthopedic, eye, or cardiac issues) as well as lifestyle-related challenges like weight management, dental health, skin or ear problems, and anxiety.

Responsible breeders help reduce inherited risk through appropriate health testing, careful selection of breeding pairs, and transparency about family history. To understand more about responsible breeding programs that prioritize health and genetic screening of breeding pairs, check out Making Science Simple: Canine Genetics for Puppy Shoppers.

As an owner, you play an equally important role. Consistent preventive veterinary care, proper exercise and enrichment, healthy nutrition, and early screening can significantly improve long-term health outcomes.

Whether a Pomachon is right for you depends less on the breed itself and more on how well its typical energy level, temperament, and care needs align with your daily life. Important factors include your schedule and activity level, living environment, household dynamics (such as children, other pets, or allergies), and tolerance for noise or independence. Long-term fit also comes down to maintenance like grooming, training needs, and how often you travel or rely on outside dog care.
