Get to Know Newfiedoodles

  • Large and Loving Family Companion: Newfiedoodles inherit the Newfoundland’s gentle giant temperament, making them affectionate, patient, and especially good with children. Their size and loyalty make them excellent family guardians.
  • Intelligent and Trainable: The Poodle parent contributes high intelligence and trainability, so Newfiedoodles can excel in obedience, therapy work, or even service roles. They respond best to positive reinforcement methods.
  • Water-Loving Heritage: With Newfoundland ancestry, many Newfiedoodles enjoy swimming. Their water-resistant coats and webbed feet make them natural swimmers, and some retain strong water rescue instincts.
  • Low-Shedding, Hypoallergenic Potential: Thanks to the Poodle influence, Newfiedoodles often have curly or wavy coats that shed minimally. This trait can make them a better fit for allergy-sensitive families, though grooming is still intensive.
  • Large and Strong Build: They are powerful dogs, often requiring space and confident handling. Proper socialization and training are essential to ensure their size doesn’t become a challenge in daily life.

Breed History

The Newfiedoodle is a modern hybrid breed developed by crossing Newfoundlands and Poodles, typically the Standard Poodle. Breeders sought a dog that combines the Newfoundland’s gentle, family-oriented temperament with the Poodle’s intelligence, trainability, and hypoallergenic coat traits. The goal was a friendly, versatile companion suitable for families, therapy work, and active lifestyles. Though relatively new, the breed has gained popularity for its balance of size, affection, and smarts.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Gentle & Family-Oriented: Newfiedoodles are affectionate, patient, and protective, often forming strong bonds with all household members.
  • Intelligent & Curious: They enjoy problem-solving and learning new tasks, making them responsive to training but sometimes requiring mental stimulation to prevent boredom.
  • Calm but Playful: While they can lounge contentedly indoors, they also enjoy playtime, outdoor activity, and swimming, reflecting their working-dog heritage.

Care

  • Exercise: Daily activity, including walks, play, and optional swimming, keeps them physically healthy and mentally engaged.
  • Training: Positive reinforcement and early socialization are essential to manage their large size and channel their intelligence constructively.
  • Grooming: Their dense, often curly coat requires regular brushing several times per week and periodic professional grooming to prevent mats.

What to ask your breeder?

It's important to ensure your breeder conducts thorough health screenings on the two dogs that were bred for the litter. Reputable breeders should perform genetic laboratory testing and also orthopedic evaluations. There's no way to guarantee every puppy in every litter is 100% free from health problems, but responsible breeding practices greatly reduce the risk.
