Get to Know Japanese Spitzs

  • A True “Snow White” Dog: The Japanese Spitz is known for its pure white coat, pointed ears, and bright, expressive face. Their appearance often resembles a smaller version of the Samoyed or American Eskimo Dog, giving them a striking, almost “fairy-tale” look.
  • A Highly Popular Companion in Japan: Developed specifically as a companion breed, the Japanese Spitz became widely beloved in Japan for its friendly nature and adaptability to family life. Their popularity grew rapidly in the mid-20th century and they remain a common household pet in Japan today.
  • Surprisingly Big Voice for a Small Dog: Japanese Spitz dogs are naturally alert and can be quite vocal when they detect unfamiliar sounds. This makes them excellent watchdogs, though it requires training to manage excessive barking.
  • Double Coat Built for Weather: Their thick double coat provides insulation in cold weather and protection from the elements. While beautiful, the coat sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing to prevent tangles and matting.
  • Highly Intelligent and Quick to Learn: Japanese Spitz dogs are smart and eager to please, making them quick learners. They excel in obedience training and enjoy mental stimulation through games and tasks.

Breed History

The Japanese Spitz was developed in Japan in the early 20th century by breeding various European Spitz-type dogs, such as the German Spitz and possibly the Samoyed, to create a smaller, companion-focused breed. The goal was a friendly, adaptable dog with a beautiful white coat and a cheerful personality. They gained popularity in Japan after World War II and were later introduced to other countries, where they became valued as family pets and show dogs. Today, they are recognized for their striking appearance, loyalty, and playful spirit.

Personality and Behaviour

  • Loyal & People-Focused: Japanese Spitz dogs form strong bonds with their owners and enjoy being included in daily activities. They can become anxious if left alone for long periods.
  • Alert & Watchful: They are naturally vigilant and quick to notice changes in their environment. This makes them excellent watchdogs, but also means they may bark at new stimuli.
  • Playful & Energetic Indoors: They enjoy playtime, games, and short bursts of activity. They typically adapt well to apartment living as long as they receive regular walks and mental stimulation.

Care

  • Exercise: Daily walks and play sessions are sufficient; they don’t require intense exercise but do need regular activity to stay happy.
  • Training: Use consistent, positive reinforcement training to harness their intelligence and eagerness to please.
  • Grooming: Brush several times per week and more often during shedding seasons to keep their double coat healthy and prevent mats.
