The Kishu Ken, often called the Kishu or Kishu Inu, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Kishu Ken is an ancient Japanese breed from the Kishu region (now Wakayama and Mie Prefectures) of Japan. One of the six native Japanese spitz-type breeds, the Kishu was originally used for hunting wild boar and deer in mountainous terrain. The breed was designated a National Treasure (Living Natural Monument) by the Japanese government in 1934. While originally coming in various colors, modern Kishu Ken are almost exclusively white, as hunters preferred the white dogs for visibility.
