Breed history
The Catahoula Leopard Dog (Louisiana Catahoula Leopard), often called the Catahoula or Catahoula Cur, is a beloved breed with a rich history.
The Catahoula Leopard Dog traces its origins to the southern United States, specifically Louisiana (the breed is named after Catahoula Parish). It was bred as a versatile working dog — historically used for herding livestock and controlling wild hogs in rugged swamp and forest terrain. The lineage is thought to involve Native American dogs and European-settler dogs (such as French Beaucerons) interbred to adapt to the environment and tasks of the region. In 1979, the breed was recognized as the official state dog of Louisiana.
